Description
I can do the assessment, but then ….
<<The Wall Model>>
Let me explain.
A long time ago, I started lecturing at my local university. My brief was to pull together everything the students had learnt over their 4 years about learning difficulties in kids. And I had 10 hours to do it.
Along the way, I discovered the students had all the puzzle pieces.
They just didn’t have the picture.
There’s nothing worse than that overwhelming lack of confidence when you feel like you’re guessing, blindly shoving pieces together. And then trying to present it to the parent confidently, when it’s already breaking.
And that’s where The Wall Model comes in.
It gives you the big picture.
It gives you a framework for clinical reasoning.
It shows you exactly how your assessment findings tie up with the child’s presenting difficulties.
It gives you a clear way to explain it to parents.
It gives you a framework to set your goals.
And all these things set us up for effective treatment.
And suddenly, the puzzle had a picture, and everything made sense.
Hi Bunty
I picked up your book again this week and was browsing through it in preparation for a job shadowing student. You are amazing – it is so cleverly and logically put together and I can only imagine what an amazing resource it is for students let alone us therapists. Well done! I know it has been around for a few years but I thought I would share my admiration!Celina Quintal-Steytler, Occupational Therapist, Cape Town
It all starts with The Wall Model – a clinical reasoning tool that links assessment findings to presenting difficulties.
If you want to know exactly how all the components from vestibular to VMI fit together…
If you want to be confident in clinical reasoning and linking findings to presenting difficulties…
If you want to be able to engage parents so they understand exactly what you’re doing to help their child…
This is exactly what The Wall Model was created to do.
Forever ago, I was presenting a lot of workshops on different aspects of learning challenges, and I presented them as linear graphics, showing how one skill built on the next and how it all affected what the kids wanted to and were expected to do at school.
With my background in Ayres Sensory Integration and Bobath Neruo-Developmental Therapy, I was able to develop and linearly present each different aspect. At some point I realised all these different lines fitted together, and The Wall Model was born.
I started using it with my students and I could see the difference it was making for them. (And qualified therapists too!)
And after 20 years of lecturing, the students continued to say: “It helped me so much.”

I must say that as a final year student from University of Kwa-Zulu-Natal, learning from your material really has increasingly helped us to develop such necessary skills during our Paediatrics blocks, therefore, naturally, I opted to get the book to assist me with a lifetime of learning! And yes, will be saving up for Part 2 as well…
I deeply commend you for contributing so greatly to the repertoire of our profession.

Let me tell you, it’s neither.
The Wall Model will help you make the complicated make sense when you’re starting out, and will help you make your advanced understanding reachable for parents later on. You’ll have it to keep for years to come.

The jump from student to practice can be a daunting one. We are expected to assess, plan and treat with confidence and scientific evidence. Bunty’s Wall Model and book was an amazing tool for me as it is easy to read and understand, and answered so many questions in the simplest way!
I would recommend this book to both students and qualified OT’s. The Wall Model is an exceptional assessment and planning tool which both therapist and parent can understand.
