AOTA's Hot Evidence on handwriting indicates we should not provide isolated training on handwriting components. They recommend we use activity-based practice – that is, actually practising handwriting. While we must always respect the evidence, we need to interrogate all aspects of it and not just blindly accept it.We cannot reject, out of hand, all bottom-up interventions based on this evidence. The research doesn’t always cover every last scenario we meet in clinical practice. Sometimes we need to apply the principles of our scope of practice, along with evidence, to reach a point where we are sure we are serving our children in the best possible way.I’ll take but one example. You have a third-grade child who is struggling with handwriting. The teacher has identified that the child consistently switches hands during writing tasks. Your assessment confirmed this. They are constantly switching. (And no, they are not ambidextrous because that means they perform equally well with both hands. This child is not performing well with either hand.)Would it make sense to use a top-down approach here? Would you be practising handwriting? If so, which hand will the child be using? It just doesn’t make sense not to first focus on hand preference. Sometimes, bottom-up is the way to go, despite AOTA’s Hot Evidence.Pop over and grab the updated Handwriting Wall, an application of The Wall Model®, and have the underlying foundations close at hand so you can decide on an intervention plan with both the evidence and your clinical reasoning close at hand.Get your copy of this download from the link below. ...
